Solarplate with Dan Welden: Intaglio and Relief Approaches
Workshop with Guest Artist, Dan Welden
Feb. 26 - March 1, 2026 | 10:00am – 4:00pm
All materials and lunch provided.

We are honored to welcome Dan Welden, the originator of solarplate printmaking, to Print House. A pioneer of safer, greener printmaking methods, Dan has transformed the field through his 50+ year career as an artist, master printer, and educator. This workshop is a rare opportunity to learn directly from the innovator who introduced non-toxic, light-sensitive solarplates to artists worldwide.

Over four days, participants will learn how to create, process, and print a solarplate as both intaglio and relief. Using a wide range of source materials—including photographic images, drawings, marks, transparencies, and paint—you’ll develop your own plates and print them with Akua inks. Alongside technical instruction, you’ll explore the creative potential of this low-tech, environmentally friendly approach to printmaking.

Expect to:

  • Learn hands-on solarplate techniques step-by-step

  • Experiment with both intaglio and relief printing methods

  • Work one-on-one with Dan as well as in group demonstrations

  • Produce monoprints and small editions from your own plates

  • Gain confidence in a sustainable, versatile printmaking process

Each morning will focus on new techniques, with afternoons reserved for open studio exploration. Students will leave with finished prints, new skills, and the experience of studying closely with one of printmaking’s great innovators.

DETAILS

  • Level: Intermediate-Advanced, some printmaking experience recommended.

  • Dates: February 26 - March 1, 2026

  • Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm daily

  • Class size: Limited to 8 participants

  • All materials and lunch provided
