$240.00

Printmaking & Paired Needle Coptic Bound Books with Erin Keane & Denise Markbreit
Workshop with Guest Artist, Erin Keane
November 1-2, 2026 | 10:00am-2:00pm daily
All materials provided

Join artists Erin Keane and Denise Markbreit for a two-day exploration of monoprinting and bookbinding, where your own hand-printed papers will be transformed into a beautiful paired coptic bound book. This workshop combines two complementary processes—playful printmaking and tactile book arts—into one creative experience.

LEVEL: All levels, no prior printmaking or bookbinding experience required

Day One – Monoprinting with Denise Markbreit
Dive into the expressive world of monoprinting with the versatile Gelli plate. You’ll experiment with innovative, accessible techniques using simple materials and replacing paint for ink. Explore photo transfers, stencils, paint markers, and other experimental approaches (with a surprise or two along the way). If time allows, screen printing will also be introduced. You’ll finish the day with a stack of vibrant prints to use as pages and covers for your bookmaking.

Day Two – Bookbinding with Erin Keane
Using the prints you’ve created, Erin will guide you in constructing a paired coptic bound book with a hard cover. Your finished book can stand alone as a portfolio of prints or evolve into a mixed media journal. Along the way, you’ll be encouraged to incorporate collage, stitching, and personal ephemera into your pages, making your book uniquely your own.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Learn accessible monoprinting methods with the Gelli plate

  • Experiment with layering, transfers, and stencil techniques

  • Gain hands-on experience in paired Coptic bookbinding

  • Leave with a hand-bound book filled with their own printed papers

DETAILS

  • Level: All levels, no prior printmaking or book binding experience recommended

  • Dates: November 1-2, 2026

  • Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm daily

  • Class size: Limited to 8 participants

  • All materials and lunch provided

Please bring a small stash of ephemera for use in your book.

ERIN KEANE

Erin Keane is an artist working with photography, encaustic beeswax, and bookbinding. In photography, she explores the elasticity of light, and creates luminous paintings with photographic brushstrokes and layers of encaustic. In bookbinding, she explores innovative bindings and stitches, and designs encaustic book sculptures and journals to honor books as an art form. "Books, how I love books. I love them brand new, pristine with blank pages, primed for possibilities. I love them softened and worn and filled with messy yet beautiful thoughts, words, and sketches. When I discovered bookbinding, I was stunned to my core and thought “I could do this every day… forever.”

Erin lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina, and works daily at her cozy home studio near Pisgah National Forest.

DENISE MARKBREIT

Denise discovered Akua ink - a soy based, safer printmaking solution while at an artists’ retreat. It was a game changer for her printmaking practices. Delving into safer techniques, without solvents or chemicals, opened up a world of eco-friendly printmaking possibilities including Mokuhanga, Mokulito, Mixed Media printing and Solar Plate print matrixes. Denise has been hooked on green printmaking ever since!

In addition to her pursuit of printed fine art images, Denise creates hand printed home accessories, and print based mixed media images and sculptures. Denise also teaches printmaking classes and workshops.

In 2018 Denise founded the Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. After the devastation of Helene in 2024 she founded Print House with fellow printmaker, Anna Bryant, in 2025. Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her fine art prints have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and reside in art collections worldwide.
