4-Week Session: Four Approaches to Lino Block

$225.00

Lino Basics: Four Approaches to Block Printing
Thursdays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM — April 9-30, 2026
Class tuition covers all materials

This four-week lino series is the perfect introduction to block printing, offering a hands-on look at four foundational approaches to linoleum printmaking. Each week focuses on a different technique, giving students a broad understanding of how color, registration, and planning work across multiple methods. Classes are technique-driven, approachable, and designed to build confidence while leaving room for play and experimentation.

All classes are two hours long. Students will work primarily with 4 × 4 linoleum blocks and print by hand.

Week 1 — Intro to Lino
April 9
We’ll start with the basics: carving tools, mark-making, inking, and hand-printing. Students will create a one-block, one-color print while experimenting with simple, playful color surprises, think simple color splashes and overlays that bring variation and energy to each print. This session is all about getting comfortable with the material and the process.

Week 2 — Multi-Block Printing
April 16
This class introduces multi-color printing using multiple blocks. Students will learn how to build and use a simple registration jig to ensure that separate blocks line up cleanly and accurately. We’ll focus on planning imagery across blocks and understanding how layers of color interact, all while continuing to work at a manageable 4 × 4 scale.

Week 3 — Reduction Linocut
April 23
Reduction printing uses a single block to create multiple colors by carving and printing in stages. Students will learn how reduction works, how to plan imagery in reverse, and how to think through the sequence of carving and printing. Using set imagery, this class emphasizes understanding the process and building a strong technical foundation for this classic method.

Week 4 — Jigsaw Linocut
April 30
We’ll wrap up the series with jigsaw linocut, an approach to multi-color printing that uses one block cut into pieces rather than multiple blocks. This technique offers a flexible and intuitive way to work with color while maintaining strong registration. It’s a fun, inventive method that opens up new possibilities for composition and color play.

This series is designed as an introduction to four core linoleum printing techniques. Each class focuses on learning the process and gaining hands-on experience rather than producing finished editions. Deeper-dive classes will be offered in the future for students who want to further explore their favorite techniques.

Portrait of artist and printmaking instructor Denise Markbreit of Asheville, NC.

DENISE MARKBREIT — PRINTMAKER and CO-FOUNDER of Print House

Denise Markbreit, co-founder of Print House, is a lifelong printmaker and educator with a deep knowledge of print processes. Nearly 20 years ago, discovering Akua ink at an artist retreat marked a turning point in her practice, sparking an ongoing commitment to building the safest, most environmentally conscious print studio possible—one that protects her health as well as that of the students and collectors who move through the studio and gallery.

A multidisciplinary artist, Denise’s work centers on woodblock and monoprint techniques, exploring themes of landscape, memory, and shadow. She works in the space between abstraction and representation, drawing on her affinity for wabi-sabi and Japanese aesthetics. Her visual language extends across printmaking, textile work, constructions, and mixed media, often incorporating a strong sense of drawing throughout.

In 2018, Denise founded Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in 2024, she co-founded Print House with fellow printmaker Anna Bryant in 2025.

Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her prints, constructions, and textiles have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and are held in art collections worldwide.

ANNA BRYANT

Anna Bryant’s work and expertise span a range of printmaking techniques, from relief and traditional screen printing to more recent focus on low-tech, experimental approaches like monoprinting with screens. Her artistic practice is centered on graphic compositions and condensed abstract forms that explore the figurative, blending structure and spontaneity to create visually engaging prints.

Anna is a founding member of Print House, where she fosters a community for accessible, hands-on printmaking. In this class, she brings her experience and passion for the medium to guide students in creating their own striking prints and exploring new and innovative approaches to composition, layering, and color.
