Jan 31: Intro to Tetra Pak

$180.00

Workshop with Print House Founders, Denise Markbreit & Anna Bryant
January 31, 2026 | 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Class tuition includes all materials.

Tetra Pak is a type of food carton commonly used for soups, broths, and milk, and it is capable of producing remarkably rich, etching-like prints using simple tools and a press. In this hands-on workshop, students will work with salvaged Tetra Pak cartons, learning how to score, peel, and cut the material to create a wide range of visual effects. Plates will be printed both intaglio and embossed, highlighting the versatility of this sustainable process.

In the morning, the focus will be on techniques for constructing the plate and printing in a single color. In the afternoon, students may create additional plates and experiment with adding color through multiple inks. This workshop offers an accessible and environmentally conscious introduction to intaglio printmaking, with methods that can easily be adapted for a home studio.

What You’ll Learn

  • An introduction to Tetra Pak printmaking as an alternative intaglio process.

  • How to prepare salvaged Tetra Pak cartons for use as printing plates.

  • Scoring, peeling, cutting, and texturing techniques to achieve varied marks.

  • Extensive exploration of markmaking using a wide range of tools.

  • Printing Tetra Pak plates intaglio and as embossed prints.

DENISE MARKBREIT

PRINTMAKER and FOUNDER / OWNER of Print House

Denise discovered Akua ink - a soy based, safer printmaking solution while at an artists’ retreat. It was a game changer for her printmaking practices. Delving into safer techniques, without solvents or chemicals, opened up a world of eco-friendly printmaking possibilities including Mokuhanga, Mokulito, Mixed Media printing and Solar Plate print matrixes. Denise has been hooked on green printmaking ever since!

In addition to her pursuit of printed fine art images, Denise creates hand printed home accessories, and print based mixed media images and sculptures. Denise also teaches printmaking classes and workshops.

In 2018 Denise founded the Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. After the devastation of Helene in 2024 she founded Print House with fellow printmaker, Anna Bryant, in 2025. Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her fine art prints have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and reside in art collections worldwide.
