August 22: Intro to Drypoint

$65.00

Workshop with Print House Founders, Anna Bryant & Denise Markbreit
August 22, 2026 | 1:00pm–3:00pm
Class tuition includes all materials.

Join us for a two-hour intaglio printmaking workshop in honor of our spotlighted artist, Porge Buck. In this class, we’ll explore the art of drypoint etching—a low-tech, hands-on method of creating rich, expressive prints through direct mark-making.

Porge Buck was a beloved printmaker known for her etching practice and was an original River Arts District artist before moving her studio to Black Mountain. This workshop is offered in her honor and celebrates her lasting contribution to the Asheville printmaking community.

You’ll learn the fundamentals of drypoint printmaking, a technique within the intaglio family, and leave with a deeper understanding of both the process and its expressive potential.

What You’ll Learn

  • An introduction to intaglio printmaking

  • How to transfer and create an image using drypoint tools

  • Techniques for incising or scratching into a plate to create rich, ink-holding marks

  • Inking and printing your plate by hand

  • How to experiment with adding color using watercolor, colored pencils, and other media

  • Best practices for clean, thoughtful printmaking

Portrait of artist and printmaking instructor Denise Markbreit of Asheville, NC.

DENISE MARKBREIT — PRINTMAKER and CO-FOUNDER of Print House

Denise discovered Akua ink - a soy based, safer printmaking solution while at an artists’ retreat. It was a game changer for her printmaking practices. Delving into safer techniques, without solvents or chemicals, opened up a world of eco-friendly printmaking possibilities including Mokuhanga, Mokulito, Mixed Media printing and Solar Plate print matrixes. Denise has been hooked on green printmaking ever since!

In addition to her pursuit of printed fine art images, Denise creates hand printed home accessories, and print based mixed media images and sculptures. Denise also teaches printmaking classes and workshops.

In 2018 Denise founded the Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. After the devastation of Helene in 2024 she founded Print House with fellow printmaker, Anna Bryant, in 2025. Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her fine art prints have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and reside in art collections worldwide.
