A New Start: Asheville Print Studio returns as Print House

When Hurricane Helene tore through Asheville last year, it didn’t just damage buildings—it scattered routines, disrupted lives, and, for us, took away a place we called home. The storm destroyed our original studio, leaving behind soaked inks, warped presses, and a haunting quiet where once there had been the hum of creativity and community.

But as any printmaker knows, the process of creating something new often begins with pressure and resistance. And like the prints we pull from our presses—layered, textured, and shaped by every moment that came before—we’ve emerged from this storm transformed.

We’re thrilled (and deeply emotional) to share that Asheville’s print studio and gallery is back—now as Print House, in a new home on Carolina Lane. What was once a space reduced to rubble is now a vibrant, 2,300-square-foot two-floor studio built with purpose, resilience, and a lot of heart.Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

Our Story

Print House stands on the foundation of a deep and evolving legacy. Originally founded as Asheville Print Studio by artist and educator Denise Markbreit in 2017, the shop began in the River Arts District with a single etching press, a vision for community, and a passion for keeping printmaking alive. As interest and momentum grew, so did the space—moving and expanding three times to accommodate the needs of artists, students, and a growing creative community.

Denise’s dedication to print as both craft and conversation built the framework that we continue to honor today. Her influence lives in the techniques we teach, the tools we care for, and the deep respect we hold for this enduring medium.

A Space Reimagined

Our mission remains the same: to share our love of printmaking, to preserve its rich traditions, and to carry it forward with care. Print House continues to be a space rooted in craft, curiosity, and connection. We are proud to operate as a green, sustainable studio—using solvent-free methods and environmentally conscious practices in every part of our process. With an entire floor dedicated to our education center, we’re excited to expand our offerings of classes and workshops.

Alongside the hum of presses and the scent of fresh ink, the gallery at Print House offers a space to reflect, gather, and engage. It currently features the work of Denise Markbreit and Anna Bryant, showcasing the depth, experimentation, and beauty of contemporary printmaking.

From Flood to Fresh Start

This new chapter wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of our creative community, grant partners, friends, and fellow artists who rallied around us when everything felt lost. You helped us believe that the work mattered enough to rebuild. Every donation, every message, every shared memory from our old space helped lay the foundation for this new one.

From the smudges on our drying racks to the fresh light coming through our new studio windows, this space carries the imprint of everything we’ve been through—and everything we’re moving toward.

What’s Next?

We’ll be announcing a calendar of upcoming classes and events soon, and we can’t wait to see new faces alongside the familiar ones. If you’d like to stay updated, sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram [@printhouseavl].

This isn’t just a new beginning—it’s a continuation of the story we’ve been telling all along: that art is both fragile and unbreakable, quiet and insistent, solitary and communal. That even in the face of destruction, creation finds a way.

Here’s to new prints, new projects, and new life on Carolina Lane.
