October 2: Monotype Magic — Printmaking with Watercolor

$150.00

Workshop with Print House Co-Founder, Denise Markbreit
October 2, 2026 | 10:00am - 3:00pm
Class tuition includes all materials

Do you love to paint and draw? Explore the possibilities of low-tech printmaking using an array of water-soluble drawing and painting materials alongside synthetic printing plates. In this workshop, we’ll reimagine traditional printmaking by working without standard printing inks, instead using watercolor and other water-based media to create expressive, painterly prints.

Students will learn how to translate imagery from a variety of sources—including photographs, drawings, and previous artwork—into both one-of-a-kind monotypes and small series. Through simple, direct techniques, we’ll explore how to build layers, capture gesture, and embrace the fluid, spontaneous nature of watercolor in printmaking. Printing will be done both by hand and with the press, offering a range of approaches and results.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a collection of prints that stand on their own or can be further developed with additional media. This workshop is an accessible and experimental introduction to monotype, perfect for those looking to expand their drawing and painting practice into print.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to prepare plates and substrates to work with watercolor and other water-based media

  • Best materials to use for successful water-based monotypes and monoprints

  • Techniques for creating one-of-a-kind prints and developing small, varied editions

  • How to build and use a simple jig for both hand and press printing to achieve clean, consistent results

  • Approaches to translating existing imagery into monotype prints

  • Methods for layering, mark-making, and embracing spontaneity in the printing process

Portrait of artist and printmaking instructor Denise Markbreit of Asheville, NC.

DENISE MARKBREIT — PRINTMAKER and CO-FOUNDER of Print House

Denise Markbreit, co-founder of Print House, is a lifelong printmaker and educator with a deep knowledge of print processes. Nearly 20 years ago, discovering Akua ink at an artist retreat marked a turning point in her practice, sparking an ongoing commitment to building the safest, most environmentally conscious print studio possible—one that protects her health as well as that of the students and collectors who move through the studio and gallery.

A multidisciplinary artist, Denise’s work centers on woodblock and monoprint techniques, exploring themes of landscape, memory, and shadow. She works in the space between abstraction and representation, drawing on her affinity for wabi-sabi and Japanese aesthetics. Her visual language extends across printmaking, textile work, constructions, and mixed media, often incorporating a strong sense of drawing throughout.

In 2018, Denise founded Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in 2024, she co-founded Print House with fellow printmaker Anna Bryant in 2025.

Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her prints, constructions, and textiles have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and are held in art collections worldwide.
